Cape Town’s Cray Cray Fashion

J_B_Met_2013_fashionSouth Africa’s thoroughbred racing industry has been growing in popularity in the past few years. Much of that growth can be attributed to its run and sometimes outrageous fashion component.

The J&B Met is a grand raceday that is in its 36th year. This annual get together is a “must-attend-event to rub shoulders with the Cape’s elite.” This event attracts an estimated fifty thousand people from all over the country to the picturesque setting of Kenilworth Racecourse in the heart of Cape Town.

” This intense and vibrant gathering of the rich and famous, the fashion junkies and those who seek the thrill of thundering hooves of majestic thoroughbreds as they compete for glory in the greatest race on the Southern tip of Africa is enveloped in a cauldron of sensual excess that sets the pulse racing.”

As always we love the racing, but we wouldn’t be called ‘Fashion at the Races’ just for the horses. “Why should the horses get all the attention?”

Very similar to our ‘Fashions on the Field’ competition the J&B Met holds a ‘Most Elegant Couple’ competition which has grown so large in the recent years that it has become and invite only as well as consists of a pre-judging to keep the numbers manageable. Each year has a theme and this years theme is “Made to fly.”

Here’s J&B’s own description: ” It is in this spirit that J&B challenges all of us to wear groundbreaking outfits to flaunt our unique and excessive personalities to the J&B Met. This year’s theme calls on supporters to break the rules and transcend fashion and style to new heights. Those attending this year’s J&B MET are invited to take up the challenge and arrive at Kenilworth in over the top, groundbreaking, outfits.”

Over the top was an understatement! Enjoy the photos!
